Understanding Goods & Services Tax (GST) in India

Complete guide to inclusive/exclusive calculations, official rate slabs, and CGST/SGST/IGST structure.

Inclusive vs Exclusive GST Formulas

1. GST Exclusive (Adding Tax):

GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) ÷ 100

Gross Total = Base Price + GST Amount

2. GST Inclusive (Extracting Base):

Base Price = (Total Retail Price × 100) ÷ (100 + GST Rate)

GST Amount = Total Retail Price - Base Price

CGST, SGST & IGST Bifurcation

The Indian GST framework bifurcates tax depending on the supply jurisdiction:

Intra-State Supply (Within same state):

GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State/UT GST (SGST). For example, an 18% rate becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST.

Inter-State Supply (Between two states):

The entire tax is levied as Integrated GST (IGST) collected by the Central Government.

Frequently Asked Questions about GST in India

Statutory guidance on GST compliance and invoicing rules.

How do you calculate Inclusive GST vs Exclusive GST?
In Exclusive GST, tax is added on top of the base price: GST = Base Price × (Rate ÷ 100). In Inclusive GST, the retail price already contains the tax: Base Price = (Total Retail Price × 100) ÷ (100 + Rate), and GST Amount = Total Retail Price - Base Price.
When should I charge CGST and SGST versus IGST?
If the supplier and buyer are located within the same state (intra-state transaction), GST is divided equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). If the supplier and buyer are located in different states (inter-state transaction), Integrated GST (IGST) is levied at the full rate.
What are the current GST rate slabs in India?
India has four main GST rate slabs: 5% (essential goods), 12% (standard processed items), 18% (most services, software, and consumer electronics), and 28% (automobiles and luxury products). Some essential food items and healthcare services have a 0% (Nil) rate.
What is GST input tax credit (ITC)?
Input Tax Credit (ITC) allows businesses to reduce the tax they have already paid on inputs (purchases) from the tax they owe on output (sales), preventing the cascading effect of taxation ("tax on tax").
