What is Professional Tax?

Professional Tax is a direct tax levied by individual State Governments on persons earning income from salaries, employment, trade, or profession. Income Tax Deduction under Section 16(iii)

What is the constitutional ceiling on Professional Tax in India?
Under Article 276(2) of the Constitution of India, the total amount payable in respect of any one person to the State or to any one municipality, district board, local board, or other local authority by way of taxes on professions, trades, callings, and employments cannot exceed ₹2,500 per financial year.
Why does Maharashtra deduct ₹300 in February instead of ₹200?
To reach the constitutional limit of exactly ₹2,500 per year, the Maharashtra State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act mandates a deduction of ₹200 per month for eleven months (April to January = ₹2,200) and ₹300 in the final month of February (₹2,200 + ₹300 = ₹2,500).
